When I install a mod for minecraft (e.g. Xaero's minimap) it shows me a message (in game) that an update is available, so I go back to curseforge and see that there is indeed a newer version and curseforge won't even show that there is an update . I also had the same with the JEI mod.

By default the cliend will only update to Release versions of mods. You can change that in the profile's options, there is a "Prefered Release Type" dropdown menu
