Clear Policy & Filtering for AI-Generated Thumbnails and Content (Reduce AI Slop)

Details

Hello CurseForge Team,

I would like to submit a feature and policy request regarding the increasing amount of low-effort or misleading content created using generative AI, particularly in thumbnails, cover images, and presentation materials.

As an active creator, I have noticed a growing trend where:

  • AI-generated thumbnails are used in a way that misrepresents the actual content.

  • Some uploads rely heavily on AI-generated visuals without clear labeling.

  • This creates confusion for users and reduces trust in high-quality, manually created projects.

Platforms like the Minecraft Marketplace already apply strict rules and labels regarding thumbnails, branding, and misleading presentation. I believe a similar approach would greatly benefit CurseForge.

Proposed Improvements

I would like to suggest the following possible improvements (one or more could be implemented):

  1. Optional or mandatory labeling for AI-generated thumbnails or promotional images.

  2. Clear guidelines on acceptable use of AI-generated assets (e.g., allowed for inspiration, not for deceptive representation).

  3. Moderation or filtering for low-effort AI-generated covers that do not reflect the actual project.

  4. Reporting category specifically for misleading AI-generated visuals.

These changes would not ban AI usage entirely, but rather encourage transparency and higher-quality submissions.

Why This Matters

CurseForge is a trusted platform for mods, addons, and community-created content.

Without clear rules, AI-generated “slop” can:

  • Lower overall content quality

  • Harm legitimate creators

  • Mislead users who expect authenticity

Clear policies would help protect both creators and users while keeping the platform fair and future-proof.

Closing

Thank you for taking the time to consider this request.

I truly believe this would help CurseForge continue to grow as a high-quality and creator-friendly platform.

Kind regards, nxzott.

Agree with your points except the distinction between "manually" created projects necessitating being of higher quality. As someone who has designed mods manually, I don't find my scrutiny of quality to be any less when I use AI to help me. Inasmuch as this stops people from posting low quality content however the method of production happens, that I do understand.

This needs more attentions. The increasing number of AI Thumbnails while scrolling through mods is such a headache. It would be much easier to deal with if you could have an ai-generated content tag that you can exclude from your search results. As well as transparency needed would help avoid the ones that are vibe coded. I'd prefer to support and play mods by talented people, not a slopbot.
