When a mod has an update available, often updating it will, in fact break the modpack, and so the best option is to hold off on updating the mod on your computer until it is updated further for compatibility or patches. however, waiting for an update that fixes the initial game-breaking update can be tedious in large modpacks, as you must click on each individual mod, then versions, then check the upload date.
Modders would benefit from some displayer next to the "update" button in the application that displays when the newest usable update was uploaded, or alternatively how many updates are pending for that mod.
